The Russian civil war was a multi-party war fought from 1917 to 1922. The war broke out immediately after the Russian Revolutions in 1917, which dismantled the autocracy and monarchy in Russia, but set them up with a provisional government during the February Revolution. Soon after, during the October revolution, the provisional government was replaced with a Bolshevik, or communist, government. The Bolsheviks caused the most turmoil within Russia because many of the Russian people saw the Bolsheviks as a threat to their way of life, they knew that with them in power, Russia would never be the same. The two largest combatant groups fighting during the civil war were the Red Army and the White Army. The Red Army fought for the Bolsheviks, and the White Army favoured capitalism and monarchs. Eight foreign nations joined the white Army in fighting, including but not limited to the Allied forces and pro-German armies. The Red Army crushed these forces in a large battle at the beginning of the warefare. What remained of the White Army then continued the fight in small skirmishes on the periphery of conflict, but not making many dents in the Red Army. The result of the warfare is victory for the Red Army and the establishment of the Soviet Union.
